How much do you think the oil spill will impact you and your family in the next year?

According to the AP-Gfk Poll taken in mid-August after the BP well in the Gulf of Mexico was capped, Americans are far less concerned about the ramifications of the spill than in June when the well was still gushing.

Only 21% of respondents, compared to 40% earlier, still care “a great deal” or “a lot” about the affects the spill will have on their lives.

Importance of Primary Environmental Issues on Business

From the “Sustainability in Business Today: A Cross Industry View” report, published by Deloitte:

“The two main challenges that respondents identified in making their products more sustainable were keeping the product cost-neutral to their customers and making the sustainable product’s quality and functionality comparable to that of the traditional alternative. Cost, especially, emerged as a major concern with regard to the marketability of sustainable products. As one consumer products respondent put it, ‘Our customers are not going to pay us any more money for [sustainable] products, so it has to be cost-neutral. That is what we are learning over and over—there is no premium for green products.’”

50 Years of American Sweet Consumption, Annual Average

The USDA reported that over the last half-century American consumers became “conspicuous consumers of sugar and sweet-tasting foods and beverages.”

Per capita consumption of caloric sweeteners increased 43 pounds, or 39%, between 1950-59 and 2000, when Americans consumed an average 152 pounds of caloric sweeteners each, only 3 pounds below 1999’s record average of 155 pounds.

What will the upcoming 2010 report show? Will green awareness and healthier eating habits cut the rise of sweet consumption—or make no difference at all?

US Wind Power Installations by Quarter

According to the “AWEA: Mid-Year 2010 Market Report,” released by the American Wind Energy Association, only 700 megawatts (MW) of US wind power installations were added in the second quarter of 2010, dropping by 57% and 71% from 2008 and 2009 levels, respectively.

As the release stated: “Wind power’s boom-and-bust cycles not only cause layoffs but also discourage investment in new manufacturing facilities. In effect, the US is losing the clean energy manufacturing race to Europe and China, which have firm, long-term renewable energy targets and policy commitments in place.”

Lead Blog Stories: Week of July 19-23, 2010

According to the Pew Research Center Project for Excellence in Journalism, a posting in the Americablog, authored by John Aravosis, which showed that photographs of the BP crisis center during the Gulf cleanup were altered in photoshop, generated the most comments and links in the blogosphere during the week of July 19-23, 2010.

The blog, and the amount of pickup it received, illustrates the growing role of the internet and social media as journalistic watchdogs. Green marketers—all marketers—should take note.

The second most-blogged-about item, a column in the Washington Post Magazine by Gene Weingarten, a satirical look at newspapers in the age of online news, also dealt with the changing face of journalism.
